Do lenders require a marine survey before financing a boat?
May 11, 2026
It depends on the lender and boat age. Most lenders require a marine survey on boats over 10 years old or valued above $50,000. A survey is also standard when the sale is between private parties. Dealership sales of newer boats often skip the survey requirement. The buyer pays for the survey, which typically costs $15-$25 per foot of boat length.
