A ballast system is not technically required for wake surfing, but it makes a dramatic difference in wave quality. Without ballast, the wake from most inboard boats is small and difficult to surf without a rope. Adding 1,500-3,000 pounds of ballast water creates a steep, powerful wave. Factory ballast systems fill and empty automatically. Aftermarket ballast bags are a common and effective upgrade for older wake boats without built-in ballast.
