Should I sell my boat privately or through a dealer?

A private sale typically nets 5-15% more than a consignment sale after you subtract the dealer commission. But a dealer handles all the friction: marketing, showings, test drives, financing coordination, and title paperwork. Private sales require you to screen buyers, be available for showings, accept payment safely (cashier's check or wire), and handle the title yourself. For boats over $30,000 or sellers who value their time, consignment often makes more sense.
