Pre-Purchase Boat Inspection

What should I test during a boat sea trial?

During a sea trial, test: cold start behavior (engine should start easily without excessive cranking), acceleration through all RPM ranges, wide-open throttle performance (compare actual top speed to specs), handling at slow and high speeds, steering responsiveness, trim tab function, all electronics and gauges under real operating conditions, and any specific systems (ballast pumps, trim, livewell) relevant to the boat type. Bring the boat to operating temperature and hold it there for at least 15-20 minutes.
