There’s no single “best” fifth wheel for full-time living; there’s a set of reasons the type suits it, and a short list of what to look for in a specific one. Here are seven reasons, and the Lake Havasu catches.
Seven reasons fifth wheels win for full-time living
1. Room. The bed-mounted hitch is why a fifth wheel has the raised front bedroom, taller ceilings and the biggest living area of any towable. A 36- to 42-foot fifth wheel with three or four slides is a small apartment.
2. Basement storage. The raised floor over the hitch creates the pass-through basement that a travel trailer doesn’t have. Full-timers fill it.
3. Tanks. Bigger fresh, gray and black tanks mean longer stays between dumps, which matters more the longer you live in it.
4. Towing stability. With the pin weight over the truck’s rear axle, a fifth wheel tracks and turns more predictably in wind and at highway speed than a bumper-pull of the same length.
5. Separation. Bedroom up front and up a step, living space behind; on the bigger floor plans a second half-bath or a loft. Two people living in one box for years appreciate a door.
6. Build. Builders that market full-time or four-season fifth wheels typically specify them differently from weekend trailers; read the construction, insulation and appliance specs and the warranty rather than the brochure adjective.
7. Consignment when plans change. A well-kept fifth wheel is easy to consign here when your plans change: no fees, a fair market value agreed together, and a check within 10 business days after it sells.
The catches
The truck. Pin weight commonly runs 15 to 25 percent of the loaded trailer weight; a 15,000-pound fifth wheel at 20 percent puts 3,000 pounds on the truck before the driver sits down. That is one-ton-truck territory, and for the heaviest fifth wheels and toy haulers a dually; but the three checks against the actual loaded weight decide it, not the truck’s class. Bring the door-jamb payload sticker, not the catalog number, and a broker will run the three checks with you. Our travel trailer vs. fifth wheel guide has the seven numbers.
The heat. A big fifth wheel in a Havasu summer needs dual air conditioners, shade, and seals that have been looked after; slide-out seal wear on fifth wheels stored in full sun is the pattern we see most. Tires age on the calendar here; for the roof, follow the specific manufacturer’s inspection schedule and approved sealant requirements and have damaged or separating seals addressed promptly; and the refrigerator needs a four-hour run at ambient before you believe it. Inspect at midday.
Where it fits. A 40-foot fifth wheel limits your campground choices; check the site length before you book, and plan long stays rather than constant moves.
What to look for in a specific unit
- A full-time or four-season rating from the builder, and the frame and insulation that go with it
- Slides that run evenly and seals with no cracks, flattening or daylight; press the floor near each slide for softness
- Roof inspected by a qualified professional, not just glanced at (walk it yourself only if the manufacturer confirms the model’s roof may be accessed and you have the safe access and safety equipment it requires); tire DOT codes on every tire including the spare
- The VIN run at nhtsa.gov/recalls, and the title matching the VIN on the unit
- The storage history: a unit kept under cover wears differently from one that sat in full sun from May to October
Every used unit on our lot has been looked over, and we don’t list one we wouldn’t sell to a friend; an independent mobile RV inspection, paid by the buyer, is always welcome. We don’t assert a specific unit’s recall status or promise that every system works.
